Summary of IRS Publication 502 - Tax
Deductible Health Expenses
Eligible Expenses?
Read the
IRS publication 502
to see the official line but here's a small summary
 | Eligible expenses are out-of-pocket
expenses which you pay for medical, dental and vision services not
covered by your health insurance provider. Medical care expenses include
amounts paid for the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or
prevention of disease, and for treatments affecting any part or function
of the body. The expenses must be primarily to alleviate or prevent a
physical or mental defect or illness. |
 | Expenses for solely cosmetic reasons
generally are not expenses for medical care. |
 | Expenses that are merely beneficial to
one’s general health (for example, vacations) are not expenses for
medical care. |
 | Common household products such as
band-aids, alcohol, and antiseptics are only considered to be eligible
expenses if they are necessary for the mitigation of a specific medical
condition. For example, syringes could be claimed by a person suffering
from diabetes. |
